Dissident independent journalist and blogger Yoani Sanchez broke boundaries when she set up the Cuban news site 14ymedio ? a site that gives Cubans an alternative news source outside of the strict control that is held over reporting in Cuba. Sanchez risked landing herself in hot water after creating the news resource yet maintains strong integrity and honesty in her work to deliver authentic news to the public.
Singer and songwriter Dayme showcases her Afro-Cuban roots through her songs which she sings in a combination of Yoruba, Spanish and English. The incredible talent has travelled around the world with her unique brands of neo-soul and jazz, trailblazing her way to the top of the Cuban music scene. She won the 2015 Juno Award for ‘best jazz album’, and has been described as Cuba?s ?finest young female singer.?
This amazing woman is remembered as a national heroine in Cuba. Ana dedicated her life to advancing women?s rights and took an integral role in the fight for Cuba?s independence from Spain. She was captured in 1871 by imperialist forces and taken away to live in exile in Spain until her death in 1901. She is commemorated by Order of the Ana Betancourt medal; an award given to women who exhibit great revolutionary merit.

From the age of 19, Alonso was stricken with an eye condition, becoming partially blind. ?Despite this, former dancer Alicia Alonso has run the Cuban National Ballet (Ballet Nacional de Cuba, founded in 1955) for decades, pioneering the Cuban influence on the global ballet scene. Best known for her portrayals of Giselle and the ballet version of Carmen, she propelled the dance community within Cuba to a level which is now critically acclaimed – nationally and internationally.
This Cuban designer and graphic artist co-founded the famous brand ?Clandestina? alongside Leire Fernandez. They began designing with recycled materials and gradually grew their brand into one of the biggest in the country. Idania del Rio and her business partner are now proud owners of the first independent Cuban company to sell their products online.
