For Cuban’s the celebration of Christmas is a super special time of year, some may not be aware, however, that Christmas was officially cancelled in Cuba between 1969-1997.

Here we look at Cuba’s Christmas past and how you can party with us Cuban style this year at Alma de Cuba.

When Castro Cancelled Christmas

For three decades Cuban?s were not allowed to publicly celebrate Christmas because Fidel Castro, the country’s leader, was a well-known atheist. Cuban people could privately enjoy Christmas in their own homes but there were no mentions of the holidays in the media, shop fronts or any public space and no traditional Christmas decorations or festive related good was sold.

This was until 1997 when the Pope visited Cuba and beseeched Castro to lift his ban of the holiday thus uniting Cuba with Christmas cheer once again.

Because of Castro?s ban, there was an entire generation of Cubans who hadn?t celebrated Christmas, people who were born and lived into adulthood without ever having seen a street lit up with fairy lights or seen a giant Christmas tree in their local town or village.

All this changed in 1997 and people flocked to stores to purchase all the Christmas trappings the rest of the world had enjoyed over the last 30 years.

Nochebuena

For Cuban?s, the festivities begin on Christmas Eve or Nochebuena, as entire families come together to enjoy a feast of traditional Cuban food, music and dancing.

The feast would include roasted pig, rice and black beans, yuca and fried plantains and for dessert, what else but Rum cake and Arroz Con Leche or Rice pudding to us.

Because of the ban on Christmas itself Cuban?s hosted Nochebuena to celebrate their love for each other and not the gift-giving indulgent Christmas day the rest of the world knows and loves.
